But not so much when using it on a fullframe : On the D3, however, issues occur with this lens. A certain amount of vignetting when the lens is set wide open is both to be expected and indeed readily visible. But stopping down one or two clicks resolves that issue nicely. The centre sharpness is excellent even on the D3, but the tendency for the corners lacking critical sharpness when the lens is focused towards infinity at its longer end is unexpected and troublesome. For landscapes at 200 mm, you need to stop down way too far to get the corners just barely acceptable, even to f/22 in some cases. I think the covering power of this slim design simply is not adequate for a good performance across the entire FX frame, at least towards the 200 mm setting. For PJ-style work or for studio and portraiture, this flaw is tolerable, but not for landscapes. Nikon really needs to come up with a Mk.II model of this general-purpose zoom lens. I followed his advise after I got a D800 (the 2.8 80-200 AF D worked fine on my D3, but was too soft wide open on the D800) and got a VRII version copy. Jul 27, 2021 at 12:51 PM leewoolery Offline • • • • Upload & Sell: On I used the original AFS 70-200f/2.8 vr1 for years but the 70-200 F/2.8 FL E, on the D6, is incredibly sharp and the AF is about as fast as the 200 f/2. Is it worth the money? From my perspective, it is worth every penny! It will be used extensively for fall sports media days, studio and on-location portrait sessions, volleyball and basketball. The sharpness and AF speed have to be witnessed, in person, to be fully appreciated. I just repurchased the 2.8E FL.... which was one of my favorite lenses over the past decade. If you have a desire, as I do, to shoot F and Z mount, get the 2.8E FL.... but get the 2.8Z if you are full steam mirrorless and have deep pockets. That said, if you're shooting portraits, I may stick with the V1. The biggest reason to upgrade at this time is lack of support from Nikon. My copy had AF squeak and another weird issue with manual focus, both of which required trips to Nikon.... something no longer possible. Most of the time it was sharp, but it sometimes was soft. The thing that bothered me the most was the size and weight. I ended up getting the 180mm f2.8 AF which was always much sharper, smaller, and it weighted far less. A win win win IMO. I still own both. The FL is amazingly sharp but the VR1 is no slouch. With all of the other more modern choices from Nikon and third parties, there is a lens for any budget. The AF 180/2.8D is a great lens, an all time fav as was the AIS version. I'm using the vr1 70-200 on the D780 mostly for a few months and have no issues with it so far. I shoot mostly portrait, lifestyle and performance and it's been great. It was certainly a bargain considering the performance though it's well known each successive version has gotten even better. It's def big and heavy, but the vrII was even heavier though 10mm shorter. The current version is slightly shorter and lighter, they're all made in Japan unless that's changed recently. I used one on a D3s, both of which were supplied by my employer years ago. The lens is sharp in the middle third of the frame where the AF module can see things, the VR works well, and the AF motor is reliable. The vignetting wasn't an issue for the work I was doing. I will say I was definitely not doing landscapes with it. I also was definitely not too interested in sharpness in the corners. I recommend both the VR1 and the f4 to anyone looking for a 70-200 on a budget. I use VR2 now, but I would not hesitate to do paid work with a VR1. True I was shooting DX, but for sports in low light you�re not going to be concerned with corner sharpness or a bit of vignetting. The way this question is phrased, �how bad �.� is not really fair, this is a professional quality lens and superb performer. I had it on D70s. Then I had it on D3 and D800. The vignette issue was never a problem since the software both in camera or post processing will easily correct all that. Both copies had heavy vignetting that I did not care for. I prefer to add vignetting in post if I want it. Both copies were very sharpe but the bokeh was a bit strange wide open when shooting things like tree branches, fence wire in the background etc. So when the VR II came out I could not sell them off fast enough.
