The driver grabbed the gun and during the struggle, he was shot twice in the right hand, Heims said.

The suspect took the marijuana and ran away in an unknown direction, according to Heims.

The victim drove himself to a hospital with injuries that were notlife-threatening, Heims said.

The suspect was described as wearing all black clothing, a black beanie and a black bandana covering his face.

People affected by last year’s Lilac fire, including Bonsall area residents and employees, can now apply for food assistance benefits from the state until Feb. 16, under the special Disaster CalFresh program, county officials announced Monday.

The fire started just west of Interstate 15 and about a half-mile south of state Route 76 on the morning of Dec. 7. It swept west through Bonsall, charring about 4,100 acres and destroyed 157 structures.

Federal and state officials have now given the OK to provide food assistance to people who lived or worked in the area, said Rick Wanne, director of eligibility for the county’s Health and Human Services Agency.

According to the county, people who may be eligible for the assistance include those who:

    • Lived or worked in the following zip codes 92028 (Fallbrook), 92003 (Bonsall), 92084 (Vista) or 92057 (Oceanside); and
    • Lost income, had damage to their home or self-employment property or had disaster-related expenses; and
    • Are not already getting food assistance through CalFresh, the state’s food stamp program. (Those already receiving the benefit will automatically have their cases reviewed for the supplemental assistance.)

Emergency benefit amounts are determined on a case-by-case basis.
Applicants must apply in person by Friday, and must undergo an in-person interview.

The applications are being accepted at the following sites:

    • North Coastal Family Resource Center, 1315 Union Plaza Court, Oceanside; or
    • Fallbrook Community Resource Center, 202 W. College St., Fallbrook.
