2023 mayoral elections

Pursuant to the North Miami City Charter, regular elections to fill the office of mayor, city councilmember or city clerk shall be held in odd-numbered years, on the second Tuesday in May. In the event no candidate receives a majority of the votes cast in the regular election, a runoff election between the two (2) candidates receiving the largest number of votes for a seat shall be held in odd-numbered years, on the first Tuesday in June. Any subsequent runoff election shall be held in exactly three (3) weeks thereafter.

Candidate Residency

Pursuant to Section 5 of the Charter of the City of North Miami, four (4) single-member districts are hereby created for the election of four (4) city council members, one (1) member from each district, with each district to be designated as District 1, District 2, District 3, and District 4. Any person seeking the office of mayor or councilperson must be a resident of the city and/or the respective district of North Miami for at least one (1) year prior to qualifying for office. 

As provided below, each candidate for city council shall run in one (1) of the four (4) districts designated as districts 1, 2, 3, and 4. Pursuant to Section 5 of the City Charter, the mayor shall continue to be elected at-large. 

Persons running from a particular residential area must be a resident of the residential area which s/he proposes to represent on the Commission at the time of qualifying, at the time of his/her election and must continue to reside in such residential area during his/her term of office. Candidates must also be electors of the City who have resided continuously in the City for at least one year preceding the date of filing to qualify.

Elected Official Descriptions

Mayor

The Mayor position is elected to a two-year term. Each individual can serve a maximum of two consecutive terms.

City Council

The City Council is elected by district to four-year terms. Beginning with the election in 2013, Council representatives can serve a maximum of two consecutive four-year terms.

City Clerk

The City Clerk is elected to four-year terms. Beginning with the election in 2013, the City Clerk can serve a maximum of two consecutive four-year terms. All candidates in North Miami municipal elections must win by a 50% plus 1 margin.
