The ATP Cup is an international hard court men's tennis tournament between competing nations, which started in January 2020. The tournament is played across 3 Australian cities over 10 days in the lead up to the Australian Open and features teams from 24 countries.

The event sees the return of an ATP team competition into the calendar for the first time since the ATP World Team Cup, which was held in Düsseldorf from 1978 to 2012. The inaugural tournament took place between 3 and 12 January 2020 and was played in Sydney, Brisbane, and Perth. Sydney hosts the first three finals between 2020 and 2022.

The History of the ATP Cup

On 2 July 2018, ATP director, Chris Kermode announced that he had plans to organize a men's team tennis tournament which came after the Davis Cup changed their format six months prior to the announcement. The tournament which at the time of the announcement had the name World Team Cup which was similar to the previous World Team Cup that took place in Düsseldorf from 1978 to 2012.

Four months later, on 15 November, the ATP with Tennis Australia announced that the tournament was renamed to the ATP Cup with twenty four teams playing at three cities in preparation for the Australian Open. Those cities would later be revealed to be Sydney, Brisbaneand Perth with the Hopman Cup being axed due to the new tournament.

Tourament Format

The format saw 24 teams divided into six groups of four teams each. The teams will face in ties composed of two singles match and one doubles match. The match between the No. 2 of each team will open the tie, then the No.1 of each team, and the doubles match closing the tie. The doubles match will be played regardless whether the tie is decided or not.

The winner from each group will be joined by the two best second places in the quarterfinals of the tournament for three knock-out rounds until a champion team is crowned.

A new mixed $15m (£13m) tournament featuring teams from 18 nations playing matches across three Australian cities will kick off the 2023 international tennis season, Tennis Australia announced on Friday.

The inaugural edition of the United Cup, which replaces the short-lived ATP Cup men's team event, will launch on December 29 this year and run through to the final in Sydney on January 8.

Brisbane and Perth will also host round-robin matches in the group stage of the tournament, which will offer ATP and WTA ranking points to the four men and four women on each national team.

The more popular Hopman Cup mixed team tournament ran in Perth at the start of the year from 1989 to 2019 but was axed to make way for the ATP Cup.
