My file automatically opens instead of saving when I download in ChromePosted on: Oct, 2020 By: Art Holden Have you tried downloading items in Chrome but they open instead of downloading? If you are using Google Chrome as your internet browser and notice this, don't worry, we can help! If the file automatically opens instead of saving when using Chrome, keep on reading! Show Learn how to set whether a file opens or saves automatically when downloading using ChromeIn a perfect world: The file downloads normally...hooray!Ideally, when you click "Download" on one of our items (in Chrome) you'll have this icon show up in the lower-left corner of your computer screen. If you click the dropdown arrow (right next to the word "gif" in the image above) you get 3 options: By now, the file is already downloaded to the Downloads folder on your computer. Clicking the dropdown menu only gives you additional options.
The file automatically opens...how to make it download instead! So, if you click "Always open files of this type (even once!)- ... what happens is that the file will automatically open instead of downloading to the folder, and will open in whatever the default program is for the file type. Then, the file automatically opens instead of saving when I download in Chrome To change this setting, start by clicking the "Tools" icon on your Chrome browser (Updated 7/17/2020 - click the 3 DOTS icon) When you click on the three small lines dots (tools icon), you'll see a dropdown box appear. Click on "Settings" and you'll see a new page pop up in your Chrome browser window. Scroll down to Advanced Settings, click Downloads, and clear your Auto Open options. Next time you download an item, it will be saved instead of opened automatically. If you're more of a visual learner, we did create a brief video of how to set chrome to download links instead of opening them below. View Transcript Good morning everybody, this is Kara Jones with PresenterMedia, and today were talking Chrome. Or more specifically, what happens when you click on a link in Chrome and it keeps opening instead of saving to your computer. What do I mean by that? In the background I have our PresenterMedia website open, dont worry guys I tested this out this morning. If you open up a file, or rather you click on a link and then click on a file to download it, sometimes, not all the time, but sometimes, you might notice that you dont get a cute little download option, it just opens the file in the viewer, then you open the viewer and youre like wait a minute waaaaah! I want to save this, I want to save this whole thing, how do I save this? I dont know how. So what is happening right now, is Chrome is using the settings that are going to allow you to preview any kind of item. So this is not just the video backs, this is not just the clip art images, this is anything really that youre able to open from our website or even from other websites. So you just click on a link and it opens it. You can use edit and create, try to find out where youre saving this file. If youre like me, instead of having to go through all these steps, youd rather just have the file download, and then youre done. So, to get to that, all we have to do is in Chrome, we get to our settings. To get to settings go to the three little drop down and you go down to Settings, third from the bottom right there. Then click on Advanced, and downloads. Youll notice that the downloads section atthe very top has a default location for anything you would save to, and then you have ask for where each file saves before downloading, open certain file types before downloading. That is the option we want to go and have cleared. Click Clearand now by default when we click on something instead of it automatically opening it, its going to give us that beautiful little download option at the bottom. And remember you can always click the up arrow and Always open files of this type if you do just want to preview it lets say you do watch a lot of the video backgrounds instead of downloading them. Or you can click show in folder. Show in folder is great because it can show you where everything is downloaded to, and not only that, you can be able to make sure if you did download something one, two, three times whoops! You can have access to everything that did get downloaded to that location. So this is just a great way for you as a user to be able to have more control over what it is that youre downloading. Our site does not start a download till the download button is clicked.
