Dell’s Inspiron gaming laptop lineup has long offered a decent gaming experience at an affordable price. However, since Dell owns Alienware it's always careful not to step on its alien feet, and thus nearly all of the off-the-shelf Inspiron 15 Gaming laptops sport a mid-range spec sheet.

The newest version of the Inspiron 15 7000 (See it on Dell.com) / (See it on Currys PC World UK) adopts a few upgrades over the previous version, and the biggest one is that the GPU has been upgraded from a low-end Nvidia GTX 1050 Ti to a GTX 1060. Other small changes include the move to an IPS panel, a slight reduction in size, and the addition of a fingerprint reader.

Here are the specifications of the New Inspiron 15 7000 Gaming I'm evaluating:

Breaking from the design of the previous generation of Inspiron 15 7000 Gaming laptops, Dell has taken a sleeker, more streamlined aesthetic approach. Gone are the sometimes overbearing bright red highlights on the black body. Instead, Dell was more restrained with only the Dell logo on the exterior of the Matte Black model outlined in Dell’s Beijing Red color scheme. Speaking of which, you can still purchase an all Beijing Red variant if it’s more suited to your style.

The keyboard uses a combination of red backlights and lettering. The touchpad is noted by red around the perimeter. Despite not being a daring new approach to the overall design, I appreciate the changes Dell has made to the overall feel of its Inspiron 15 7000 Gaming laptop. Measuring 15.32 x 10.82 x 0.98-inches and weighing 5.82 pounds, it’s a bit hefty compared to the Asus ROG Zephyrus, another Max-Q-equipped laptop, yet it's still quite portable.

The 15.6-inch FHD display is held up by a hinge that’s centered on the laptop's body, instead of snapping across the width of the housing.

A full-sized keyboard along with a number pad fits snugly inside the body of the laptop. In the top-right corner, just above the number pad, is the power button that pulls double-duty as a fingerprint sensor for Windows Hello.

Thanks to the keyboard’s shallow feel, I rather enjoyed typing on it. It reminded me of Apple’s wireless keyboard, though a bit softer and without the angle. The touchpad was, well, touchy, and often got confused between when I wanted a regular click or a right-click. But let’s be honest, it’s been awhile since a touchpad worthy of high praises has adorned any sort of gaming laptop. I’m growing more and more convinced a poor touchpad experience is just part of the gaming laptop territory.

On the right side of the laptop you’ll find a headphone jack, two USB 3.1 Type-A ports, a USB 3.1 Type-C with Thunderbolt 3 support, and an HDMI 2.0 port. On the left side there's power, Ethernet, another USB 3.1 Type-A, and an SD card reader.

I would gladly trade one of the Type-A USB ports for a second USB-C port, not only for balance but also because of continued prevalence of USB-C across smartphones and accessories.

Also as a "gaming laptop" Dell doesn’t include any pre-installed software for creating custom gaming profiles, key macros, or adjusting the lighting of the keyboard. In a sense, it’s nice because you don’t have to worry about managing software that is sometimes duplicative of system settings or is unnecessary (see: Alienware). That said, there was incessant badgering by McAfee LiveSafe to complete signup — something I continue to experience on the Inspiron 7000 Gaming even as I write this — and it's annoying.

Middle of the road specs often leads to middle of the road performance. And at first glance, one could easily say that way of thinking applies to the particular Dell Inspiron 15 7500 Gaming laptop I tested. Take a look at the benchmarks, then I’ll explain in more detail.

Here’s a quick rundown of the scores tallied by the Dell Inspiron 15 7000 Gaming:

Overall, the Inspiron 7000 Gaming’s benchmarks are respectable, considering they are just a few points behind the likes of the Razer Blade and Alienware 13. But there are two other major factors you have to consider — price and specs.

Both the Razer Blade and Alienware 13 are nearly double the cost of the Inspiron 7000 Gaming, and each one is boosted with an Intel Core i7-770HQ and 16GB of memory. The Inspiron 7000 Gaming I tested is equipped with an Intel Core i5-7300HQ, 8GB of DDR4 memory, and a Nvidia GeForce GTX 1060.

The only suggestion I would make is to forgo a model with a lone 256GB SSD and pick up a unit with an SSD and a 1TB HDD. In testing this review model laptop, I couldn’t install all of my benchmark apps and games due to running out of space on the SSD.

Benchmarks only tell part of the story, however, with real-world use telling the rest. Beyond slow loading times for games, I failed to experience any performance hiccups during my testing. On a few occasions while playing PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds, I noticed an odd graphical "wave" effect that when there was a lot of motion (running/fighting) going across the screen as I was driving a vehicle or running and shooting. This issue was limited to PUBG, however, and I failed to notice the same wave-effect in Epic’s Fortnite.

I found the display to be slightly oversaturated and not quite bright enough for my liking. I tend to prefer gaming (actually, any computer use) with brightness set as high as it can go.

Also with just two front-facing speakers, I constantly had to have the Inspiron 7000 Gaming at full volume to hear any approaching footsteps or shots in the distance. The fans aren’t terribly loud, but when they get whirling at full speed you know it.

At just over 2 hours of total battery life in our battery test, where a movie is looped until the battery runs out of juice, the Inspiron 7000 Gaming falls right in line with more expensive laptops. Not only is the battery life of the Inspiron 7000 Gaming impressive due to its price point, but it also shows that GTX 10-series GPU with Max-Q doesn’t mean you have to go incredibly thin and sacrifice battery size in the process.

The Inspiron 7000 is a satisfying mix of thin-ish and great battery life.

This particular configuration of the Dell Inspiron 15 7000 has an MSRP of $999, but Dell is constantly playing with the prices so keep your eyes peeled for a sale:
