Who is hosting 2024 euros?

The tournament will be held across ten cities in Germany from 14 June to 14 July 2024.

The UEFA Executive Committee has authorised the match schedule for UEFA Euro 2024. The tournament will be held across ten cities in Germany from 14 June to 14 July 2024. The opening game will be played at the Fussball Arena in Munich whereas the final will be held in Berlin at the Olympiastadion. Germany will be in Group A and will play the opening game of the tournament.

In the press release issued by the UEFA, sustainability has been a key measure behind the planning of Euro 2024 schedule. The tournament will be played in three clusters as the country is divided into three regions - North/North-East, West and South.

The statement said, “For the first time, sustainability has been included as a criterion in the tournament regulations and, consequently, three clusters of venues have been established: “North/North-East” (Berlin, Hamburg, Leipzig), “West” (Dortmund, Düsseldorf, Frankfurt, Gelsenkirchen, Cologne) and “South” (Frankfurt, Munich, Stuttgart).”

“Matches in each group will take place only across two clusters, which will reduce travel distances for teams and fans between the host cities, and favours team delegations travelling by train or bus from their base camps to the match venues during the group stage,” the statement continued.

The fixtures and kick-off times are set to be announced around the final draw on 2 December 2023 at the Elbphilharmonie in Hamburg. The qualifying is scheduled for 9 October 2022, at the Festhalle in Frankfurt. The full tournament regulations will be available on UEFA.com from 16 May.

Notably, the German team had a disappointing campaign in Euro 2020 as they were eliminated in the round of 16 by England. Since then Die Mannschaft have brought in a new coach in Hansi Flick. The Heidelberg-born has been one of the top coaches in world football where he led Bayern Munich to win the Sextuple of trophies in the 2019-2020 season.

“It all happened surprisingly quickly for me with the signing, but I am very happy to be able to work as a national coach from the autumn,” Flick said. “My anticipation is huge because I see the class of the players, especially the young players in Germany. We have every reason to approach the upcoming tournaments, for example, the home European Championship in 2024, with optimism”, he added.

GOAL has what you need to know about which countries are bidding to host Euro 2028

Euro 2028 might still be a few years away, but the road to the competition will be exciting as ever – including discovering who will get to host the tournament.

Getting to host a major tournament like the Euros is an exciting and ambitious honour, as match-goers are treated to not only the experience of watching the games, but also experiencing the culture of the host country.

So where could Euro 2028 be held, and what countries have announced their hosting plans? GOAL takes a look.

What countries have confirmed their plans to bid to host Euro 2028?

The United Kingdom and Ireland announced their plans to bid to host Euro 2028 in February, while also confirming plans to scrap their bid to host World Cup 2030.

This means that England, Scotland, Northern Ireland, Wales and Republic of Ireland are proposing a joint bid.

They said in a statement: "Following an extensive feasibility study, which assessed the potential opportunities in international football, the football associations of the Republic of Ireland, England, Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales have agreed to focus on a bid to host UEFA Euro 2028, the third-largest sports event in the world.

"The feasibility study included an analysis of the economic impact, the political football landscape and likely costs of hosting major international tournaments. On balance, the five associations have decided to focus solely on an official bid to host UEFA Euro 2028, and have agreed not to bid for the 2030 FIFA World Cup."

Romania, Greece, Bulgaria and Serbia announced their plans for a joint bid in February 2019, for both Euro 2028 and World Cup 2030.

Turkey announced their bid to host Euro 2028 in August 2019, having bid unsuccessfully to host the tournament five times in previous years: in 2008, 2012, 2016, 2020 and 2024.

When will the Euro 2028 host be announced?

The host – or hosts – of Euro 2028 will be announced on September 2023.

Do all host countries automatically qualify for the European Championships?

It is not currently known if multiple host countries will automatically qualify for Euro 2028 if they are awarded the bid.

The United States, Mexico and Canada successfully bid to host World Cup 2026 but FIFA have not yet confirmed the qualification process for the tournament. It is also possible that all three countries would qualify for the tournament through the regular process.

The FIFA Council is expected to decide which hosts, if any, will receive a direct path of qualification to the tournament.

The 2002 World Cup hosted by Japan and South Korea was the last time that a tournament's hosts did not have to play qualification matches, as they qualified automatically as hosts.

Where will Euro 2024 take place?
