8. Trạng từ cũng thường đứng một mình ở đầu câu,hoặc giữa câu và cách các thành phần khác của câu bằng dấu phẩy(,)

VD: Last summer, I came back my home country

My parents had gone to bed when I got home.

Trạng từ bổ nghĩa cho từ loại nào thì phải đứng gần từ loại ấy. Quy tắc này thường được gọi là Quy tắc "cận kề".

VD: She often says she visits her grandmother. (Often bổ nghĩa cho "says"). She says he often visits her grandmother. (Often bổ nghĩa cho "visits")

Trạng từ chỉ thời gian trong tình huống bình thường nên đặt nó ở cuối câu (như vậy rất khác với tiếng Việt). VD: We visited our grandmother yesterday. I took the exams last week.

Trạng từ không được đặt/dùng giữa Động từ và Tân ngữ. VD: He speaks English slowly. He speaks English very fluently.

Một khi có nhiều trạng từ trong một câu, vị trí của trạng từ nằm ở cuối câu sẽ có thứ tự ưu tiên như sau: [ Nơi chốn - Cách thức - Tần suất - Thời gian]

Những trạng từ chỉ phẩm chất cho cả một câu như Luckily, Fortunately, Eventually, Certainly hoặc Surely ... thường được đặt ở đầu mỗi câu.

VD: Certainly, they will be here this afternoon. Luckily, she didn't live where the war broke out in 1914-1918.

Chức năng của trạng từ:

1. Dùng để bổ nghĩa cho động từ thường. Khi đó, trạng từ sẽ đứng sau động từ. Tuy nhiên, nếu sau động từ đó còn có tân ngữ thì trạng từ có thể đứng trước động từ.

2. Dùng để bổ nghĩa cho tính từ. trong trường hợp này thì trạng từ sẽ đứng trước tính từ.

3. Dùng để bổ nghĩa cho cả câu. Trong trường hợp này thì trạng từ sẽ đứng đầu, giữa hoặc cuối câu và thường được ngăn cách bởi dấu phẩy.

Com tam literally means broken rice. Broken rice originally consisted of grains which were broken during the harvesting and cleaning of rice. In the past, as most people preferred to eat the long, whole grain rice, broken rice grains were difficult to sell and usually eaten by the Vietnamese working class because of the cheap price. Nowadays, often favored over long grain rice for its unique flavour and texture, broken rice is one of the best-loved fares in Vietnam.

Local broken rice eateries can practically be found on every street in Saigon. A broken rice dish is served with many beautiful colours from grilled pork chop with multi-flavour to steamed egg, shredded pork skin, pickles, vegetables such as tomatoes, cucumbers ... and especially sweet fish sauce that is the spirit of the dish.
