Who needs Netflix and Prime? Turns out that BBC iPlayer has a terrific collection of films to watch heres our fully updated list.

Whilst all eyes tend to be on streaming services such as Netflix and Amazon Prime when it comes to movie updates, on the quiet the BBC iPlayer service continues to play host to a limited, diverse selection of films. Whats more, a good number of them you can download to your tablet to watch on the move.

So, without further ado, welcome to the weekly updated iPlayer film list. This list will be updated every Wednesday with the latest available data from the BBC, in order of how long you have left to watch (so you can prioritise your viewing pleasure)

Due to the extended Christmas break, about a gazillion movies dropped onto the iPlayer over the festive period. Some real (Christmas) crackers in there too. Our highlights are Blade Runner 2049, Crazy Rich Asians and Mary Poppins Returns. Theres also two Paddington movies, two Spider-Man movies, five Wallace and Gromit movies and an AlanPartridge (Alpha Papa) in a pear tree.

Free State of Jones (2016)

Historical drama set during the American Civil War and based on the life of farmer and Confederate soldier Newton Knight, who led a rebellion against the Confederacy. Working as a medic on the battlefield, Knight goes AWOL following personal tragedy and returns home. While the army refuses to let him go quietly and continues to take advantage of other farmers in the area, Knight is inspired to start an uprising comprised of fellow deserters, slaves and women.

He soon becomes embroiled in a madcap plan to enter a national Song for Christmas competition and finds himself embarking on a disastrous road trip in search of the competition venue the Christmas Castle. Lost in the wilderness with a class of small children, a baby and a donkey, he has to stand up, face his fears and try to lead them not only to safety, but victory.

Portrait of a Lady on Fire (2019)

In late 18th-century Brittany, painter Marianne is commissioned by an affluent countess to paint a portrait of her sheltered daughter Héloïse so that she can be appraised by a prospective suitor in Milan. A previous attempt couldnt be completed as Héloïse refused to pose for the artist, so Marianne has to finish the portrait in secret by pretending to be a companion for Héloïse, who is unhappy at the prospect of marriage to a stranger.

In line with the wishes of the wealthy stranger, the boy is taken to London, where he is introduced to a higher class of society and transformed into a gentleman. Despite his new riches however, he is unable to win over the object of his affections a beautiful but spoiled young woman he has known since childhood.

My Week with Marilyn (2011)

It is 1956 and The Prince and the Showgirl is being made at Pinewood Studios in London, directed by and starring Laurence Olivier, who has recruited one of the biggest Hollywood stars of all time, Marilyn Monroe, to co-star with him. Colin Clark, a junior assistant on the production, is assigned the job of looking after Marilyn and keeps a journal about the week he spent with her. It proves to be a turbulent experience as Marilyn is going through marital problems with her husband and uses Colin as a much-needed sounding board for all her pent-up neurosis.
