It is crucial that a student write down everything their instructor says during a lecture
Throughout your college career, note taking is a vital skill to a student's success. At the university level, large amounts of information are covered in a short amount of time. Thus, it is imperative that students master note taking skills required to adequately keep track of and organize the information received. This involves not only good note taking skills during class, but also adequate preparation and review outside of class. In this module, we will examine the following areas: Taking Notes in Class, Effective Listening, and the Five R's of Note taking. Show

Is crucial that a student writes down everything their instructor says during a lecture?A lecture is not a dictation exercise where you have to write down everything the professor says. You need to watch out for key points, arguments and themes in the lectures. It's a good thing that lectures are recorded at LSE, so you can always go back and check if you missed a point.
What are the reasons for taking down notes while in a lecture?Note taking forces you to pay attention and helps you focus in class (or while reading a textbook). It helps you learn. Studies on learning have shown that actively engaging with the topic by listening and then summarizing what you hear helps you understand and remember the information later.
Is it good to take notes during a lecture?Actively taking notes during class can help you focus and better understand main concepts. In many classes, you may be asked to watch an instructional video before a class discussion. Good note-taking will improve your active listening, comprehension of material, and retention.
What should a student do with their notes after class?Compare notes with a classmate to check your own notes accuracy and understanding. Review and edit your notes to fill in any missing details. Summarize your notes with marginal phrases and identify potential test questions.
