Is Marvel set in 2023?

Everyone’s favorite half-vampire is returning to theaters next year. Marvel Studios’ “Blade” will premiere Nov. 3, 2023.

The news was announced out of Marvel Studio’s Hall H presentation at San Diego Comic-Con on Saturday evening. The announcement carries a nice bit of symmetry, as the “Blade” reboot was first announced at the 2019 Comic-Con — the last time that fans gathered together in-person for a convention of this size.

Three years ago, Marvel Studios chief Kevin Feige surprised Hall H by bringing out Oscar-winner Mahershala Ali. In an exceedingly coy move, all Ali did was put on “his own” hat with the “Blade” logo. Boom — a new Daywalker was born.

Since then the action film has bulked up its cast, adding Aaron Pierre and Delroy Lindo to the mix, though there’s no official word yet on their roles. Bassam Tariq is set to direct “Blade,” while Stacy Osei-Kuffour serves as screenwriter.

In addition to the release date, Feige also announced out of the panel that the film is set to begin shooting this October — fitting for one of the spookier heroes of the Marvel Universe.

Created by Marv Wolfman and Gene Colan in 1973 for the horror title “The Tomb of Dracula,” Blade is the alias of Eric Cross Brooks, a “dhampir,” or a being born between the union of a human and a vampire. With his unique abilities, Blade devotes his life to hunting vampires and other creatures of the night. Previously, the character was portrayed by Wesley Snipes in three feature films, some of the earliest comic book movies of the modern era.

Disney has announced a shake-up in the release order of Phase Four for the Marvel Cinematic Universe, as the release date of The Marvels, the sequel to 2019's Captain Marvel, is being pushed back to July 28, 2023.

The announcement of the release date change confirmed that the upcoming film would be swapping its release date with fellow MCU project Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, the third movie in the Ant-Man series. The original release date of The Marvelswas originally meant to premiere on February 17, 2023, which will now see the next chapter in the story of Scott Lang (Paul Rudd) and Hope van Dyne (Evangeline Lilly).

Details of The Marvels' plot is still mostly unknown, though it will once again star Brie Larson as the Carol Danvers and will follow up on the events after Avengers: Endgame. The film will see her teaming up with Captain Marvel super-fan, Kamala Khan, aka Ms. Marvel, played by Iman Vellani. Vellani will make her debut in the MCU in Ms. Marvel, which will be premiering on Disney+ on June 8. In addition to Khan, the film will see Teyonah Parris’ Monica Rambeau play a prominent role. Parris made her MCU debut in last year’s Disney+ series WandaVision. Zawe Ashton is set to also star in the role of a currently unknown villain, and Samuel L. Jackson is set to make his return as agent Nick Fury in the upcoming sequel. Nia DaCosta serves as director on the film.

According to Variety, insiders close to the matter are reporting that this is not a sign of any major difficulties, rather it is just that Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania is further along in the creative process, with it being announced that the film had wrapped principal photography back in November 2021. The Marvels is still in the process of filming at the time of writing. This isn't the first time that these films have been pushed back, however, as Disney pushed back their entire Marvel slate for 2022 back in October 2021 in order to give the upcoming Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness more production time. Funnily enough, this swap of release dates actually puts Quantumania back to the release date that it had before these October delays, so fans of the hero have some reason to celebrate!

The Marvels is now set to premiere in theaters on July 28, 2023.

A record seven total Marvel movies are set for release in 2023 from Disney's Marvel Studios and Sony Pictures. The stacked schedule comes after Walt Disney Studios last week announced date changes for multiple movies, including a shift for Captain Marvel sequel The Marvels from 2022 to 2023. Sony on Friday claimed dates for two new Marvel movies in mid and late-2023 — potentially including a Venom 3 — bringing the year's total to seven movies from Marvel Studios and Sony, co-producers on December release Spider-Man: No Way Home.

Marvel's 2023 slate includes The Marvels (February 17), teaming Carol Danvers (Brie Larson), Monica Rambeau (Teyonah Parris), and Kamala Khan (Iman Vellani); Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 (May 5), the final chapter in director James Gunn's trilogy; Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania (July 28), the Ant-Man threequel recently moved out of February; and an untitled movie set for November 3.

From Sony, the Spider-Man and Venom 2 studio will release two new Untitled Sony/Marvel Universe movies on June 23 and October 6; Kraven the Hunter, starring Aaron Taylor-Johnson as the iconic Sinister Six villain, was previously announced for January 13, 2023.

The seven total from Marvel and Sony top the four of 2017 (Fox/Marvel's Logan, and Marvel Studios sequels Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, Spider-Man: Homecoming, Thor: Ragnarok); and the six released in 2018 (Marvel's Black Panther, Avengers: Infinity War, Ant-Man and the Wasp, Fox's Deadpool 2, and Sony's Venom and Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse).

2019 saw the release of another five (Fox's X-Men: Dark Phoenix and New Mutants, Marvel's Captain Marvel, Avengers: Endgame, and Spider-Man: Far From Home); with five more to come in 2022 (Sony's Morbius and Spider-Verse 2; from Marvel Studios, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, Thor: Love and Thunder, and Black Panther: Wakanda Forever).

In May, Sony Pictures President Sanford Panitch told Variety that "there actually is a plan" to better bridge Sony's Spider-Man Universe and the Marvel Cinematic Universe home to Tom Holland's wall-crawler. Panitch teased this plan would become clear after Spider-Man: No Way Home, where an unmasked Peter Parker (Holland) unwittingly unleashes the multiverse when he turns to Doctor Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch) for help.
