When can changes be made to the IBEW Constitution?

I feel fortunate to have been sent to Chicago as a delegate to the 40th IBEW International Convention.  It is exciting to see the direction the union is moving.  While the motion we set forth as a local to take on a more inclusive name for our union was not adopted, we did make history by seeing it to the convention floor. I am proud to have been able to openly address the need for such a profound change and why.

IBEW 213 UNIT 2 CHAIR BECKY LUPTON speaks in favour of the IBEW constitutional amendment to change the IBEW name to the International Union of Electrical Workers. The motion did not pass, but having the conversation at Convention was very important.

Over the week, we passed resolutions that named sexism, racism and fascism as enemies of unity, and they are now named in our constitution as fundamental pillars we will not allow within our walls.  We saw gender-neutral language accepted as the language for our communication, constitution and any other writings.

The message of solidarity was clear, and loud.  We as members have work to do to ensure that we are the voices of the middle class and of labour, that we are committed to seeing unionism thrive to the benefit of everyone. Most importantly, Convention was a reminder to lift one another up, help each other, and continue to participate so that other workers might share in the same benefits we have.

We also saw contentious discussions around virtual meetings and sharing digital information. Hosting virtual meetings was not approved; however, moving forward our international newsletter, The Electrical Worker, will be delivered to members digitally.

We saw the embracing and reinforcing of bonds with contractors to move towards strong market shares in emerging industries like EV Infrastructure and working together towards common goals. A-Members saw increases to their international pension funds in recognition of the increasing cost of living, and the need to remain committed to supporting retiring members.

IBEW members are active and involved in the community, supporting Vets and the Helmets to Hard Hats initiative, and through the work by the NexGen and Women's committees, and the EWMC. Chicago is a city widely known for its skyscrapers. It is also a city where no tower had ever been built by non-union labour. We witnessed the power of organizing, and the strength that solidarity and active union involvement bring to the table.

May 20, 2021

The International Executive Council, in consultation with International President Stephenson and International Secretary-Treasurer Cooper, has voted unanimously to postpone the 40th IBEW Convention due to the COVID-19 pandemic.  The 40th IBEW Convention was scheduled to commence on August 30, 2021, but has now been postponed to Monday, May 9 through Friday, May 13, 2022.  Nomination and election of International Officers have also been postponed to May 2022 and will take place at the Convention.

On February 16, 2021, the IEC passed a resolution calling for a vote of the Local Unions on whether to amend the IBEW Constitution to add a new provision – Article XXVII, Section 1[d] – allowing the IEC, in consultation with the International President and International Secretary-Treasurer, to make temporary amendments to the IBEW Constitution if circumstances beyond the control of the IBEW make it impracticable, impossible, inadvisable, or unsafe to conduct the business of the IBEW.  That resolution passed by a vote of the Local Unions 564 to 71.

On April 20, 2021, the IEC acting pursuant to its authority under new Article XXVII, Section 1[d], made necessary temporary amendments to the IBEW Constitution to enable the Convention to be postponed to May 9, 2022.  That resolution, which sets forth the temporary amendments, adjusted timetable and key dates, can be found on the IBEW website or viewed as a PDF.

Grimard is more competitive and produces estimates 3X faster with Procore

When the pandemic lockdowns started in March of 2020, Grimard [an electrical contractor] had to decide whether to shut down its operations entirely or implement a new platform with people who were now freely available for work. Once they implemented Procore, they found a way to efficiently communicate with stakeholders and offer full transparency in terms of project costs and planning. It also allowed Grimard to utilize historical data to make project estimates more accurate. Grimard was able to streamline its bidding process, which made it more attractive to potential clients and helped the business grow.

HellermannTyton Double Slit Conduit Protects Pre-Terminated Cable Runs

HellermannTyton announces HelaGuard Double-Slit Corrugated Conduit. The two-piece solution features one semi-circular tube that snaps over another to envelop a wire or cable bundle. This makes it possible to add flexible corrugated protection to wiring that is already connected on both ends.

Standard conduit requires installers to guide cabling into and through the length of tubing. That is less of an issue at the time of manufacture. But if the ends of the wire are soldered to a terminal or otherwise inaccessible, non-slit conduit – and even single-slit conduit – can be tedious or impossible to apply.

Greenlee Mobile Bending Table Designed for Ergonomics and Anti-Theft

By Blake Marchand

For the new Bending Table for Greenlee® 881 Series Benders, Greenlee Tools, Inc. set out to improve ergonomics and product security.  Previously, contractors usually had to disassemble their bender unit for relocation off the jobsite due to it being harder to secure on the jobsite. New anti-theft features incorporated into the bending table product design allowed the cart and its accessories to be more fully locked.

This increases contractor productivity by helping reduce the need for tedious setup and tear down of the bender due to off-jobsite storage. Greenlee wanted to make the Mobile Bending Table as versatile as possible and intentionally designed it to fit through most 32” wide doors.

Fire Protection for Lithium-ion Battery Energy Storage Systems

Lithium-ion storage facilities contain high-energy batteries combined with highly flammable electrolytes. In addition, they are prone to quick ignition and explosion in a worst-case scenario. Such fires can have a significant financial impact on organizations. Rapid detection of electrolyte gas particles and extinguishing are the key to a successful fire protection concept. Since December 2019, Siemens has been offering a VdS-certified fire protection concept for stationary Li-ion battery storage systems.

How CSA Standards Can Have an Impact on Climate Change Through UN Sustainable Development Goals

By Blake Marchand

With many organizations, governments and policymakers finding it challenging to implement the UN Sustainable Development Goals [UN SDGs] , CSA Group has developed a methodology for mapping CSA standards to UN Sustainability Goals [SDGs] aimed at demonstrating how organizations, governments and policymakers can use CSA standards as an effective tool in developing and implementing their SDG strategies. The methodology was developed as part of a research project initiated by CSA Group, completed in collaboration with University of Guelph, Niagara College and the Toronto Metropolitan University. To support the methodology, CSA Group also launched an interactive searchable database that allows standards users to quickly find out how and where CSA standards support specific UN SDG targets.

The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development was adopted by all UN member countries in 2015. The agenda includes 17 UN Sustainable Development Goals that aim to promote and provide strategies to improve health, education, inequality, and the economy while prioritizing climate change and the environment.
