The 2023 Nissan Pathfinder excels at family hauling with its huge interior loaded with smart touches.

What kind of vehicle is the 2023 Nissan Pathfinder? What does it compare to?

The 2023 Pathfinder is a three-row crossover SUV. Shop it against the Ford Explorer and Toyota Highlander, among myriad others.

Is the 2023 Nissan Pathfinder a good SUV?

While not perfect, the 2023 Nissan Pathfinder makes a strong case for itself with its big, versatile interior and a refined powertrain. A wide range of driver-assistance tech adds to its appeal, nudging it to a TCC Rating of 6.7 out of 10. [Read more about how we rate cars.]

What's new for the 2023 Nissan Pathfinder?

This year, the Pathfinder range adds a new Rock Creek trim level with some rugged exterior styling touches and a slightly higher ride height.

While it may look outdoorsy, the Pathfinder is all family-hauler in its style and execution. Chunky, modern lines have the occasional touch that reminds us of its 1980s and 1990s namesakes, such as an angled C-pillar and unpainted fender flares. Inside, it’s more car-like, and upper trims can encroach on related Infiniti QX60 territory for a [slightly] more affordable price tag.

The 284-hp 3.5-liter V-6 teams well enough with a 9-speed automatic transmission. Front-wheel drive comes standard, while all-wheel drive is optional. The V-6 furnishes decent power and refinement, though the automatic can occasionally hesitate to downshift for highway passing. Properly equipped, the Pathfinder can lug up to 6,000 lb.

Even more appealing is its vast interior, with big front seats, a huge second row that easily slides forward for access to the third row, and a spacious cargo area. The 8.0-inch touchscreen boasts wireless Apple CarPlay and wired Android Auto, and a size-up 9.0-inch display is optional.

The Pathfinder comes standard with the big roster of crash-avoidance tech we expect from a family-oriented SUV, and a particularly advanced adaptive cruise control system that can take over steering, braking, and accelerating in traffic is widely available.

MIxed crash-test results are a small blemish, though. While the NHTSA rates the Pathfinder at four stars overall, the IIHS is more complimentary with its Top Safety Pick+ rating.

How much does the 2023 Nissan Pathfinder cost?

The Pathfinder starts at $36,295, plus $1,900 for all-wheel drive. That money buys the base S trim, which comes with cloth seats. For $41,015 with all-wheel drive, the Pathfinder SV is probably worth the upspend for its additional safety tech and heated front seats.

Where is the 2023 Nissan Pathfinder made?

In Smyrna, Tennessee.

The 2023 Nissan Pathfinder cuts a dashing profile, especially in Rock Creek trim.

Is the Nissan Pathfinder a good-looking car?

It’s a stylish big SUV, with a distinctive exterior balanced with a car-like cabin. We like both enough to nudge the Pathfinder to a 7 out of 10.

Outside, the chunky profile starts off with a squared-off grille bookended by big chrome goalposts. The high-mounted headlights feature brows that dive into the front fenders, a look in line with the last-generation Nissan 370Z. The Pathfinder is at its best from the side, where unpainted fender flares give it a rugged look that works paradoxically well with a two-tone roof. Broad badging at the rear adds an upscale element.

This year’s new Rock Creek has an Xterra-channeling roof rack and it tones down the chrome. It also rides a bit over half an inch higher than other models, though you’ll have to line them up to spot the differences.

The cabin features a curvy dash housing an 8.0-inch touchscreen, which grows by an inch in most higher-trim versions. Controls cluster just below. Only the flat-bottom steering wheel seems out of place.

A refined V-6 engine teams with soft suspension tuning to make the 2023 Nissan Pathfinder a capable family ride.

It may lack the whizz-bang electrified and turbocharged engines found in some competitors, but the 2023 Nissan Pathfinder gets the job done. Its strong, smooth V-6 earns it a point above average, with another nod to its comfy ride quality. It’s a 7 on our scale.

Is the Nissan Pathfinder 4WD?

It can be. All-wheel drive costs $1,900, though it’s standard on the Rock Creek trim. A limited-slip rear differential helps usher power to a slipping wheel, but ultimately this big SUV is at its best in snow, not on a trail.

Various drive modes accessed by a center console knob include a tow setting that helps a properly equipped Pathfinder lug up to 6,000 lb.

How fast is the Nissan Pathfinder?

Speed isn’t its priority, though the 284-hp 3.5-liter V-6 furnishes good acceleration with minimal underhood fuss. It’s nicely paired with the 9-speed automatic, aside from some downshift hesitation at higher speeds. Nissan clearly programmed the transmission to shift into higher gears as quickly as possible to save fuel.

Soft suspension tuning and a long, 114.2-inch wheelbase help the Pathfinder absorb bumps both big and small in stride. Even with the big 20-inch alloy wheels optional on the SL and standard in Platinum guise, the Pathfinder rides quite well. Its electric power steering furnishes little in the way of road feel, though its heft is a pleasant surprise for more spirited driving.

The 2023 Nissan Pathfinder boasts a massive, well-thought-out cabin.

A masterfully executed cabin makes the 2023 Nissan Pathfinder a solid choice for families.

We rate it at a 9 out of 10, with points awarded for its big front seats, a spacious second row with smart touches, a huge cargo area, and a refined overall feel for the money.

Base and SV versions are trimmed in grippy cloth, while two grades of leather separate SV and Platinum trims. The new Rock Creek wears a mix of synthetic leather and cloth.

Base S versions have a 6-way manually-adjustable front seat that seems like a cheap touch at this price point, though a 10-way power driver’s seat is standard otherwise. The passenger’s seat gets the same treatment in SL and Platinum trims.

The big front seats have soft padding and just enough bolstering to accommodate a wide range of passengers. The second row bench slides fore and aft to open up more cargo or third-row space, and the optional captain’s chairs have similar individual functionality. The bench is plenty wide for three average adults. Particularly nice is the ability to slide the seat forward with a child seat still attached to allow for easy access to row three.

That third row is best for kids, though.

Behind row three lies nearly 17 cubic feet of cargo space, which grows to a maximum of 80.5 cubes with row two tumbled forward. Small-item space is likewise top-notch, with plenty of bins and cupholders.

Good use of soft-touch surfaces and plentiful sound deadening give the 2023 Pathfinder a quiet, refined feel over the road, too.

Mixed crash-test ratings duel it out with a huge lineup of safety features.

How safe is the Nissan Pathfinder?

The 2023 Nissan Pathfinder is likely a safe choice overall, though a four-star rating from the NHTSA is a surprising blemish.

We rate it at 7, with points above average for its standard and optional safety tech plus a Top Safety Pick+ score from the IIHS.

Automatic emergency braking, active lane control, blind-spot monitors, and rear cross-traffic alerts come standard. All but the base S trim include ProPilot Assist, Nissan-speak for a system that takes over steering, braking, and acceleration to reduce driver fatigue on highway stretches. The system works well despite frequent audio prompts and warnings, further cementing the Pathfinder’s road-trip credentials.

The 2023 Nissan Pathfinder is a good overall value, with a wide lineup.

A value-rich lineup, a good amount of standard features, and a big infotainment system earn the 2023 Nissan Pathfinder an 8 for features.

Base S versions cost $36,295 to start, plus $1,900 for all-wheel drive. They include 18-inch alloy wheels, cloth upholstery, an 8.0-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility, and three-zone automatic climate control.

A 3-year/36,000-mile warranty is par for the class.

Which Nissan Pathfinder should I buy?

We’d set our sights on the SV, which at $41,015 with all-wheel drive adds a power-adjustable driver’s seat, roof rails, heated front seats, and Nissan’s ProPilot suite of driver-assistance tech. A moonroof, a power tailgate, and captain’s chairs are bundled together for $2,170 more.

Alternatively, the Pathfinder SL includes leather seats, front parking sensors, and a surround-view camera system for another $3,000.

How much is a fully loaded Nissan Pathfinder?

The lineup peaks in Platinum trim for about $52,500 with second-row captain’s chairs added.

A hybrid would be nice.

Is the Nissan Pathfinder good on gas?

It’s not bad for what it is, but the 2023 Nissan Pathfinder trails rivals’ hybrid options.

Most versions are rated about the same, regardless of drive wheels. With front-wheel drive, the Pathfinder logs in at 20 mpg city, 27 highway, 23 combined. Curiously, all-wheel-drive versions rate slightly higher: 21/27/23 mpg, according to EPA estimates.

SL and Platinum trims weigh slightly more and ride on bigger wheels, so they slide slightly to 20/25/22 mpg, while the higher-riding Rock Creek’s big roof rack dents it to just 20/23/21 mpg.
