As we enter the For Your Consideration period of the 2023 Grammy Awards, it’s time to revisit the conversation around one of the most frequently confusing categories at the annual awards show: Best New Artist.
Last year, we dug into the head-scratching slew of nominees, which included Japanese Breakfast, Glass Animals [who have been active for more than a decade], and FINNEAS [who had already won eight Grammy Awards at the time of his nomination in this category].
Before Grammy nominations for 2023 are released on Tuesday, November 15th, we’re breaking down everything to know about the Best New Artist category.
Who Was Nominated for Best New Artist in 2022?
The Academy tends to ultimately grant the Best New Artist to fairly established artists who are having an exceptional breakthrough year. In 2022, the nominees were Olivia Rodrigo, Arooj Aftab, Jimmy Allen, Baby Keem, FINNEAS, Glass Animals, Japanese Breakfast, and The Kid LAROI.
As for the past three years, Rodrigo won in 2022, while Megan Thee Stallion took the prize in 2021, and Billie Eilish snagged the honor in 2020.
Which Artists are Eligible for Best New Artist in 2023?
According to Billboard, a whopping 368 artists have submitted to the category for the 2023 round of nominations.
To be eligible, an artist or act must have released a minimum of five songs or one album, may not have submitted for the Best New Artist category more than three times, and must have “achieved a breakthrough into the public consciousness during the eligibility period.” That last point, being a bit vague, is often the cause of confusion when it comes to nominees who land in this category.

Grammy Awards 2022 rewind...
2022 Grammy nominees [also see WINNERS, below] had musician Jon Batiste heading the list this year with the composer and bandleader -- better known for his nightly appearances on the The Late Show with Stephen Colbert -- was nominated a whopping 11 times, followed by Justin Bieber, Doja Cat, and H.E.R. with eight.
Jon Batiste, Justin Bieber and Doja Cat head the list of 2022 Grammy nominees.
Batiste [the winner] and Bieber both
competed for the top prize - Album of the Year - along with Billie Eilish, Doja Cat, H.E.R, Kanye West, Tony Bennett and Lady Gaga, Olivia Rodrigo and Taylor Swift.
2022 Grammy Awards
performers
Performers on the big night included the show openers, Silk Sonic -- the duo of Bruno Mars and Anderson .Paak [one of the night's biggest winners] -- with additional performances by Lady Gaga, Billie Eilish, BTS, Olivia Rodrigo, Lil Nas X, John Legend, Chris Stapleton, Carrie Underwood, J Balvin with Maria Becerra, Jack Harlow, Brandi Carlile, Brothers Osborne, Jon Batiste, and H.E.R.
Cynthia Erivo, Leslie Odom Jr., Ben Platt, and Rachel Zegler also took the stage for a special In Memoriam performance. Also featured was a tribute to Foo Fighters drummer Taylor Hawkins.
2022 Grammy Awards presenters
Presenters at the 2022 Grammys included Megan Thee Stallion, Joni Mitchell and Questlove; Grammy winners Lenny Kravitz, Dua Lipa, Ludacris, Billy Porter, Bonnie Raitt, and Keith Urban; past Grammy nominees Kelsea Ballerini and Avril Lavigne; actor-musicians Jared Leto and Michaela Jaé Rodriguez; and actor Anthony Mackie. Plus -- surprise! - a special and very moving introduction by Ukraine's President Zelensky.
For the second year in a row, 2022 Grammy host was The Daily Show's Trevor Noah.
2022 Grammy Awards records
• 95-year-old Tony Bennet became the second oldest Grammy winner ever when he and Lady Gaga won best traditional pop vocal album for “Love for Sale,” their collection of Cole Porter standards. [The oldest Grammy winner remains Pinetop Perkins, the 97-year-old pianist, who won for best traditional blues album for “Joined at the Hip” in 2011.]
• With three Grammy nominations this year, Jay-Z became the most-nominated artist ever, with 83 nods.
2022 Grammy Awards controversies
Controversies at awards shows are nothing new, but this year's Grammys have made headlines with several snafus, including the removal of Taylor Swift and two of her collaborators as songwriters on Olivia Rodrigo’s “Sour,” which was up for album of the year. According to Grammy guidelines, song samples or “interpolations,” disqualified the writers from being credited.
The following day, rapper Drake -- who in the past has had a contentious relationship with the Grammys -- withdrew his name entirely from 2022 competition after being nominated for best rap album and best rap performance.
Kanye West was supposed to perform this year, but after recent erratic behavior targeting his estranged wife Kim Kardashian and Grammy host Trevor Noah, he was pulled from the show
