1. Fresh as a daisy

“ Fresh a daisy” mang ý nghĩa tràn đầy năng lượng, nhiệt huyết, ngoài ra còn mang nghĩa là sạch sẽ, gọn gàng.

Ví dụ: My sister has been travelling for almost 24 hours, and she’s still as fresh as a daisy.  

2. Couch potato

“Couch potato” để chỉ những người nghiện xem tivi và lười vận động.

Ví dụ: My uncle is such a couch potato! He often spends his Saturdays watching American football on TV.  

3. Full of beans

“Full of beans” để chỉ những người tràn đầy năng lượng, sôi nổi.

My 6 year old nephew is full of beans! He has more energy than three adults.

4. A bag egg

“A bag egg” đề chỉ những kẻ xấu, những kẻ làm hại người khác, người không đáng tin cậy.

Hey, Sue, I think your neighbour is a bad egg. He has these scary looking guys in black leather hanging around his place all the time.

5. Down to earth

“Down to earth” để chỉ sự thực tế, không mơ mộng.

Ví dụ: My aunt Karen is so down to earth. She can figure out any difficult situation, and offer a good solution.

6. Eager beaver

“Eager beaver” để chỉ người làm việc chăm chỉ, hăng hái, say mê

Ví dụ: My colleague drives me crazy! She is such an eager beaver that she always volunteers for overtime.

7. Ball in your court

“Ball in your court” mang nghĩa là quyết định hay hành động tiếp theo là phụ thuộc vào bạn.

Well, my friend, the ball’s in your court. I’ll wait for your decision.

8. Throw in the towel

“Throw in the towel” mang nghĩa là bỏ cuộc.

Ví dụ: I’ve spent too much time on this project to throw in the towel now.

9. Get a head start

“Get a head start” mang nghĩa là bắt đầu trước, đi trước, đi đầu.

Ví dụ: Let’s get up early tomorrow to get a head start on our drive to Toronto.

10. To have a whale of a time

“To have a whale of a time” mang nghĩa là có khoảng thời gian vui vẻ và hào hứng

Ví dụ: I’m from London which is a world-renowned city for its history and culture. They say he who is bored of London is bored of life! There is so much to do here that you are guaranteed to have a whale of a time if you visit.

11. To be on cloud nine

“To be on cloud nine” để chỉ cảm giác vui vẻ, hạnh phúc

Ví dụ: I must say that I adore my job and all the people that work there. It is a pleasure to go to work there each morning. I feel content with my life at the moment and I am on cloud nine.

12. To be on top of the world

“To be on top of the world” để chỉ càm giác tuyệt vời, vinh quang, hạnh phúc.

Ví dụ: I would say that art is highly popular in my nation. Art has the power to unite us and express feelings that we cannot with words alone. When I look at my absolute favourite piece of art, “starry night” by Vincent Van Gogh I feel inspired and on top of the world. It shows me true beauty and that I believe is why art is so popular.

13. It makes my blood boil

“It makes my blood boil” để chỉ cảm xúc tức giận.

Ví dụ: I get on reasonably well with most of my family. But my sister is an awful person. She is very selfish and arrogant. Just hearing her voice makes my blood boil.

14. On the ball

“On the ball” mang nghĩa là nhanh nhẹn, nhanh chóng, tinh nhanh.

Ví dụ: Our department receptionist is really on the ball when it comes to fielding calls from annoyed students.

15. In somebody’s shoes

“In somebody’s shoes” nghĩa là ở trong vị trí, hoàn cảnh của ai đó

Ví dụ: It may sound harsh but I wouldn't want to be in his shoes with his lack of great business ideas.

16. It drives me up the wall

“It drives me up the wall” mang ý nghĩa là bị làm phiền bởi điều gì đó

Ví dụ: I would have to say that my favourite food is mashed potatoes. However, it drives me up the wall when people don’t mash them properly and the potatoes have disgusting lumps.  

17. Don’t cry over spilt milk

“Don’t cry over spilt milk” nghĩa là đừng khóc vì những gì đã xảy ra nhưng không thể thay đổi được.

Ví dụ: Walter failed his examination but his dad came and said just one thing, “Son, Don’t cry over spilt milk.”

18. Every cloud has a silver lining

“Every cloud has a silver lining” nghĩa là trong cái rủi có cái may.

Ví dụ: See, yesterday you were so morose as your phone was stolen but look at you today, you got a promotion. Is it rightly said that every cloud has a silver lining.

19. Down for the count

“Down for the count” mang nghĩa là thất bại, sụp đổ, bỏ cuộc

Ví dụ: My pet dog is down for the count after playing the whole day with the frisbee.

20. Jump the gun

“Jump the gun” nghĩa là bắt đầu từ rất sớm

Ví dụ: I think I jumped the gun by buying my friends James and Susan a wedding gift. They just called off their engagement.
