 “Don’t worry about getting old, worry about thinking old.” ~Unknown #itsbirthdayseason 1 month ago DUCK LAKE LOOP BACKPACK Day 3 - Deer Lakes > Mammoth Crest > Lake George > Duck Pass Trailhead Dreaming, scheming, planning. That pretty much was the theme of morning chatter on our last morning. As we climbed up to the Mammoth Crest leaving the views of Deer Lakes and surrounding mountains behind, we were greeted with a new world. A world of whitebark pine, pumice, red rock, open landscape, and on the horizon iconic views of the Minarets/Ritter/Banner. After ooooing and aaaaing for a bit, we studied the Sherwins Mountains across from us. Hiking the traverse of the Sherwin Mountains has been on my list for a couple of years and this was the perfect view to check it out. While boogying down the trail many day hikers headed up the crest. It was time to take one last dip in a Sierra lake, have a snack, savor and reflect on our experience together and laugh. Thanks Beiswenger sisters for one fine trip. #freestylingit 2 months ago DUCK LAKE LOOP BACKPACK Day 2 - Pika Lake > Duck Lake Peak > Duck Pass > Deer Lakes Started this winner of a day casually sipping my coffee after a very bright super moon lighted our tents the entire night. I actually packed a few luxury items on this trip, my crocs and lots of fresh food, but it turns out I needed an eye mask more. First objective of the day was to climb Duck Lake Peak, elevation 12,077 feet. This peak is also referred to as Valentine Peak on some maps. The route up is class 2 and straightforward with easy walking through White Bark Pine, then turning to fun, solid granite boulders. The climber is rewarded with 360 degree views of eastern Sierra peaks surrounding the Mammoth area. Highly recommended. After descending the peak, we took a quick dip in Duck Lake then headed cross-country to Deer Lakes. This sweet little section is also part of the Sierra High Route. Deer Lakes did not disappoint. It is settled in a dramatic cirque with Mammoth Crest rising above. We leisurely pitched our tents, cleaned up, ate dinner, and sat on a large rock chatting about life and relationships. A great end to a good day. @herricane_emz #freestylingit 2 months ago DUCK LAKE LOOP BACKPACK Day 1 - Duck Pass Trailhead > Pika Lake This was one sweet deal to tag along with the Beiswenger sisters, @herricane_emz and Michelle. Tim, their brother had school obligations and had to cancel last minute. I was glad to slide right in and fill his slot. This was Emily’s second time backpacking. The relaxed pace loop included trail, a peak climb, cross-country travel (now referred to as freestyle), lots of lakes, and all the views. After a 4 hour drive to the trailhead, our 2:00 pm start was perfect with cool, clear air and amazing clouds. After enjoying all the views at the top of Duck Pass, we descended to Pika Lake. Upon arrival, we were shocked at so many tents and people set up for the night. After scouting around for quite some time, the perfect secluded camp was found. Everything was perfect until we checked in with our Garmin Minis. The preset messages sent, but the messages were never received by our families until 12:30 am. Everyone on our lists were worried and lost some sleep. This is my fifth year using this device in the backcountry successfully and this has never happened. My trust is really shattered. After getting home, I did find out that Garmin was having problems for at least 4 hours. #doingitfreestyle 2 months ago A map says to you. I've gotten more and more and more appreciative.” ~Kim Stanley Robinson Part 1 from the “High Sierra Tramp” #1secondeveryday 2 months ago Just finished a High Sierra Tramp as “Team Lounge”. @milissajayn , Michelle Beiswenger and I formed a pretty neat trio and it was an honor navigating difficult terrain with these fierce, strong, and hard core ladies. This aggressive itinerary traveled mostly off trail in and out of remote wild basins, up peaks, over miles and miles of granite boulders, loose talus and scree, up and down crazy steep cols and passes, and maneuvering up and over rock. Highlights from our days on the High Sierra Tramp: 🌟 Dips in pools of clear blue water 🌟Unique and healthy wildlife and flowers 🌟Honing in our map and compass skills 🌟Those clouds and lighting… 🌟Companionship, laughter, and sharing love and admiration for our Sierras 🌟Jumping into photos to make the group shot at the tops of mountains, passes, and cols 🌟All the views… Featured photos are from Days 1-3. 2 months ago So excited… Guess where I am heading to next? It has been so interesting reading about this wild wild land of summer light with no man-made roads or trails. I am looking forward to meeting and hiking with new clients, exploring and navigating in new territory, and having a ton of fun. In addition to all the reading, I spent a lot of time choosing gear, clothing, and food for hiking in Alaska. There are so many variables to be prepared for: inclement weather, creek crossings, wet feet, cold/wet, buggy, warm/dry, bushwhacking, spongy uneven terrain, and steep elevation gains. First video is my final choices for clothing and second is of my gear and food. My heart is full. ❤️ #dreamjob So excited… Guess where I am heading to next? My heart is full. ❤️ #dreamjob 4 months ago “Put one foot in front of the other and almost anything is possible.” ~ #CHOMPS The goal was to climb both Banner and Ritter Peaks, but with a dicey weather report (wind, low clouds, fog, possible rain, high temps at night, and soft snow) we knew as we hiked in, the objective really wasn’t smart or possible. The peaks are th icon backdrop from the top of Mammoth Mountain. In 2016, my son @grantrosander, husband @dbrosander summited both peaks. After that trip, we had the skyline etched into wedding rings for our 30th wedding anniversary. @michellelenaejewelry Day 1 - After skiing 1/2 day @mammothmountain , we headed out 12 miles from Minaret Summit to Ediza Lake loaded with 2 days of food, stiff boots, ice axes, crampons, helmets and warm clothes. It was very tiring walking on sun-cupped snow and crossing swollen creeks with those heavy packs, especially after skiing all morning. On the awesome side, our trio, Michelle Beiswenger, @dbrosander , and I were wowed by cloud formations, views, snowy mountains, and as Michelle and Dan described the landscape so well as a #bowlofwilderness . Day 2 - We woke up to what looked like the dead of winter with low clouds covering both Banner and Ritter. In good spirits, we hiked to the base of Mount Ritter and hiked up a bit to practice skills with our equipment on steep snowy terrain. The snow was very soft and hard to maneuver in the steeps. We all agreed to call the trip, headed back to the car and ended with smiles, hot tub, and food. To quote Michelle at the end of the hike, “Really a neat trip to just learn how good it can be to just take each moment and cherish it and learn and make good decisions and still come back with some adventure that was had.” 4 months ago It’s a wrap. I admit it, the last run of the 21/22 ski season from the top of Cornice was an emotional tear jerker. Crazy that @dbrosander and I were able to ski 9 months in a row from October to June. A huge highlight this year was sharing the fun with family, friends and celebrities on the mountain. Featured are photos from this year of these shredders with all the smiles and laughs. Just give me a pack on my back off the beaten path and a peak to climb. Climbing Kearsarge Peak, (12,620 foot) on our 34th wedding anniversary was perfect. We had the remote basin and peak to ourselves with an abundance of steep, loose scree and talus to navigate. Thank you for endlessly putting up with my shenanigans and always making me laugh.
