This wikiHow teaches you how to recognize the signs that a Facebook friend has restricted the amount of personal information you can see on their profile. The "Restricted" list is different from the "Blocked" list in that restricted users can still view public posts and posts on mutual friends' pages from the person who blocked them.
Steps
-
1Visit your friend's profile. If asking your friend point-blank about the issue isn't an option, visiting their Facebook profile is the next best thing.
-
2Look for empty space at the top of their profile. This is usually indicative of a gap between private posts and public posts. If you've been restricted, you won't be able to see the private posts, hence the space here.
- Depending on when your friend made their public posts, you might not see a gap here even if you have been restricted.
-
3See if their posts are all public. These will likely appear below the empty space if there is any. If there's a "Public" globe to the right of every post's timestamp, you know that you aren't seeing their private posts.
- This doesn't necessarily mean they've restricted you--they may have simply decided to post only public items.
-
4Look for a sudden lack of content. Not being able to see photos or other content that you could before might mean you've been restricted.
- It also might mean that your friend simply deleted their posts.
-
5Ask a mutual friend to look at your friend's Timeline. Even if you can't see private posts or their old photos, your friend may have just deleted their old information and locked down their account to retain privacy from all of their Facebook friends [not just you]. You can verify this by having a mutual friend look at your friend's Timeline and tell you if they see anything that you don't.
- Even just asking them if your friend has posted recently when you can't see any account activity from the past month or so will accomplish this goal.
-
6Ask your friend if they restricted you. There is always a possibility that the action was performed in error since the "Restricted" list is in proximity to the custom list section.
Community Q&A
-
QuestionI was unfriended on Facebook. I can see the public posts, and am able to read the comments and see the likes I did. Now I only see the pic. Why is that?Community AnswerIt's most likely because whoever commented blocked you. Either that, or the person's page you are on has his/her posts filtered so you can't see his/her friends.
-
QuestionHow can I tell if a friend has restricted me from seeing their posts?Community AnswerThe only way you can tell for sure is to ask someone else if they can see any posts from that person. If they can see posts that you can't, then you'll know that person has blocked you from seeing their posts.
-
QuestionHave I been restricted if I can see a friend's profile on Facebook and see their posts if I go to it, but I don't receive them on my timeline?Community AnswerEither that, or you may have accidentally unfollowed them. Go to their page and click on the menu where it says you are friends, and see if it says unfollow.
-
QuestionWhat do I do if I've been restricted by Facebook?Community AnswerIt depends on why you were restricted. In some cases, you may be able to restore your account, but in other cases you may have to make an entirely new one.
-
QuestionCan I still see old posts on a friend's page when they have restricted me?Community AnswerIt depends on the exact restrictions your friend has set up. In some cases, older posts will still be accessible, but there is an option to hide those as well.
-
QuestionWhy am I not seeing posts from a certain friend on Facebook who hasn't blocked me?Community AnswerGo to the person's profile page and make sure the Follow icon is highlighted. You can also select the See First option; if you click on Follow it will pop up. If you still don't see posts, your friend may have privacy settings set to where you, certain people, or everyone is restricted. Have a mutual friend pull up the profile page and compare it to what you can see.
-
QuestionIf I have someone blocked and I stop blocking them, will they be friends again automatically?Community AnswerNo. You need to send them a new friend request.
-
QuestionWhat does it mean if it says I have multiple mutual friends on Facebook, but it only shows a few?Community AnswerThe person's friends list is private or is set to "Only Me" so you can't see all mutual friends.
-
QuestionWhy can't I see a person's post when I could see it a few days ago?Community AnswerChances are that your Facebook friend or contact has blocked you. To double check this, have another friend who is mutual friends check and see if the post is available to them. If it is, then you're blocked. If it isn't there, either the post has been deleted or your mutual friend has also been blocked.
-
QuestionIf I unfriend someone, will they receive a notice from Facebook?Community AnswerNo, they will only notice if they go to your profile or try to contact you. Then a page will come up that says they can't be found and they will think you have deactivated or unfriended them.
Tips
- If you've been restricted by Facebook itself, you won't be able to log into your account. You can submit an appeal if you feel as though you've been restricted in error.
Warnings
- Don't push your friend for information about the restriction if it turns out they did restrict you.
